John Giorno Like Poem, “Fighting For Your Life”, by Thomas Vaultonburg

I was a huge fan of the literary zine Exquisite Corpse and was a faithful reader during its most daring years. One of my favorite of their cadre of poets was John Giorno. I think he had created Poetry Phone, and had a very distinctive style. I emulated that style in this poem from my book Submerged Structure.

Fighting For Your Life

You’re on the couch
Watching Chuck Norris
Roundhouse kick a
Bad guy

But you’re fighting
For your life

You’re in the death
Chute at Wal Mart
Buying milk

But you’re fighting
For your life

You don’t know it
You don’t know it
You don’t know it
You don’t know it

But you’re fighting
For your life

When you’re in someone
Deep and planting
Your facsimile

You’re fighting for
Your life

And when you’re watching
Your days roll
Off that assembly line
Or mowing your lawn
And you can’t decide
If Chuck Norris is
The good guy or
The bad guy
You’re really fighting
For your life
